About the Chef

David "Smitty" Smith

Smitty is a nationally recognized chef known for his unique combination of fresh ingredients and exquisite meals. Smitty is an annual chef for PGA's "Memorial Tournament" and has run kitchens for the World Games and Detroit Grand Prix. East coast restaurants boasting his culinary works include The Cliff House (at the top of the highest peak in Vermont), Nantucket Yacht Club, Point Breeze Hotel and Nantucket Lobster Trap. Local Tahoe restaurants include Resort at Squaw Creek, Westshore Café and Smokey's Grill.

Smitty apprenticed under Master Chef Anton Flory at Top Notch Resort in Stowe, VT. The three-year culinary apprenticeship focused on traditional French cooking as well as an additional emphasis on pastries and baking. Smitty authors Stir It Up , a regular feature in The North Lake Tahoe Weekly. He graduated from Northeastern University with a Bachelor's degree in physical and health education. Smitty lives in Olympic Valley, CA.

What is a Master Chef? The Certified Master Chef level is the highest and most demanding level of achievement, granted only after a chef has passed an intensive 10-day test of culinary skills and knowledge.The Master Chef test is held annually and judged by a panel of Certified Master Chefs and Certified Master Pastry Chefs. Presently, there are two approved test sites: The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park and Greystone, the CIA's West Coast campus in Napa Valley.
